Local 589 Salutes Operators on Transit Driver Appreciation Day

Driver Appreciation DayToday is Transit Driver Appreciation Day, and Boston Carmen’s Union Local 589, of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), salutes MBTA bus and subway drivers (transit operators) not only for the vital service they perform, but for the many extra acts of help and kindness they perform every day.

“The members of the Boston Carmen’s Union come to work every day to make sure our passengers are getting where they need to go,” said James O’Brien, President of the Boston Carmen’s Union 589. “The dedicated men and women operating the buses and trains, repairing the tracks, and ensuring the buses and subways are up and running are an essential part of the MBTA system and I thank them for their hard work and service to our riders.”

The Carmen’s Union, and the entire ATU, also recognize the mechanics and personnel who support these operators for their hard and often unappreciated work each day getting riders safely to and from work, school, the doctor, religious services and perform other vital daily tasks.
If you haven’t thanked your MBTA bus or subway driver recently – today is a great day to do so.

We commend the professionalism that members bring to the job, and hope passengers will join the ATU and the Carmen’s Union in thanking them for the great work that they do.

Transit Driver Appreciation Day was conceived in 2009 by transit riders in Seattle as a way to honor the many hard-working men and women who keep us all moving safely each and every day.
