John Clancy was hired by the MBTA in March 1992 as a part-time bus driver and won election as Barn Captain while still part-time. In December 1996, Brother Clancy was promoted to full-time status and was re-elected as Barn Captain for two more consecutive terms.
John was first elected Recording Secretary of the Boston Carmen’s Union Local 589 in December 2004 and re-elected by the members in 2007. John has been elected as a Delegate to the Massachusetts Democratic Convention and elected as a Delegate to the ATU International Convention in 2004 and 2007. Brother Clancy serves as a Delegate representing Local 589 to the ATU Eastern Canadian/American Conference of Unions; the ATU New England Joint Conference of Unions; the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and the Greater Boston and Norfolk County Central Labor Councils. John has also been bestowed an Honorary Membership in the Retired Transit Workers Association.
John Clancy is a graduate of the Labor Guild School of Industrial Relations and has taken various Labor Study courses at the University of Massachusetts.
John enjoys Irish culture and has an avid interest in Irish history. He is a member of the Irish Culture Centre and is an Honorary Members of The Ancient Order of Hibernians – Father Murphy Division. He is a member of St. Francis Xavier Church Parish and resides in South Weymouth with his wife
